Trip Summary

The Khongmading Valley is also known as the Hunga Valley as it is the head of the Hunga River. Also, this route is also known as the Hunga Valley Everest Trek because the panoramic view of Mount Everest can be seen from various viewpoints in this valley. On this trail you can enjoy the natural beauty as well as the culture and lifestyle of the Kulung and Sherpa communities. While going up from Charkhar, you can see the mountains like Numbur, Kongde, Choyu etc. from Hurhure, while during the trek you can observe the mountainous terrain, grasslands, forests, waterfalls, herbs, ponds and the famous lake Panchpokhari of this region.
Mahakulung village is located in the central region of Makalu-Barun National Park. On the fourth day of the trek, after reaching Hurhure from Charkhar, the park area begins. This park extends to Muddhikhark.

Hunga Valley Everest Trekking can be used as an alternative route for climbing Mera Chuchuro, Barunche Himal, Chamlang Himal as this trek is shorter and less expensive.

There are two routes on this trail from where one can get a view of the mountains, biodiversity and Kulung and Sherpa culture. Passengers coming from Kathmandu will have to spend 13 days for the first route and 10 days for the second route.

For the past few years, to climb Mera Peak, tourists used to go to Mera Peak via Lukla Chhatarla and return via the same route. Now we can use separate paths to go and return. One can go to Mera Peak via Mahakulung in Hunga Valley and return via Lukla or from Lukla via Chhatarla to Mera Peak and return to Kathmandu via Mahakulung in Hunga Valley.

There are two routes on this trail. Passengers traveling from Kathmandu on the first route take 13 days to return to Kathmandu and 10 days on the second route. Both routes start from Bung village in Mahakulung rural municipality. You can stay in Patle for the first night when going by car or jeep from Kathmandu. This is a place where you can see Mount Everest from your room.
In the early morning, you can see the panoramic view of the mountains like Everest, Lhotse, etc., and on the second day, you will go to Bung by riding a jeep.

On the third day of the journey, you have to walk from Bung to Charkhor (2 thousand 975 meters). Similarly, on the fourth day, one should reach Kholakhark (4 thousand 223 meters) from Charkhor and stay.

Kothe (3,580 m) is reached on the fifth day of the journey from Kholakhark. Kothe has good food and accommodation facilities for tourists.

Khare (5 thousand meters) can be reached from Kothe on the sixth day of the trek. On the seventh day from Khare, we reach the Khongmading Valley (4,850 m) via Mahalangur Bhanjyang. On the eighth day from Khongmading, you have to reach Bhatelma Dobhan (3 thousand 159 meters) and stay.

If the tourists are stranded due to heavy snowfall, the Hunga Valley Everest trek can be used as an alternative route from Lukla to Mahalangur, Sherpini Col, Makalu Base Camp or Amfu Lapcha.

Even though you have to walk through the forest path, the walk is very enjoyable. On the ninth day of the journey, we will reach Weikho Telam (3000 meters) from Dobhan through the forest. On the tenth day, Mudhikhark (2,590 m) is reached from Weikho Telam. On the 11th day of the journey from Mudhikhark we reach Cheskam. On the 12th day, you can reach Kathmandu or Saleri from Cheskam. If you stay in Saleri, you will reach Kathmandu by air on day 13 from Phaplu Airport.

The second route trek also starts from Bung. On the third day of the journey, reach Dimbul or Nurkum (3,014 m) in the evening. On the fourth day, reach Gangkhark (3,600 m) from Dimbul or Nurkum and stay. Gyankhark is a beautiful view point from where you can see the long range of mountains at sunrise and sunset. From there you can see mountains like Everest, Pumori, Lhotse, Choyu and Makalu. On the fifth day of the journey, Salpa reaches Bhanjyang (3 thousand 458 meters) from Gangkhark. Similarly, on the sixth day, Salpa reaches Saun Tham (3,661 m) from Bhanjyang. Siluchho (4,153 m) can be reached after a 3-hour climb from Saune Tham. A long range of Himalayas can be seen from Siluchho. Both routes require 5 to 7 hours of trekking daily. The future of Mahakulung tourism in this area is bright. This trail is one of the best destinations in Nepal for adventure trekking and cultural exploration.
